Chicago Magic Lounge is part speakeasy, part theater — a vintage, immersive bar-theater experience that brings classic charm and world-class magic to Chicago’s nightlife. We’re dedicated to delivering top-tier service, enchanting atmosphere, and seamless beverage service that keeps our guests returning for more. As a Bar Back you’ll play a critical supporting role to help bring the magic to life behind the bar.

Position Summary

We’re looking for a motivated, dependable Bar Back to join our team. In this role, you will support the bartenders and bar staff by ensuring the bar is fully stocked, clean, organized, and running smoothly before, during, and after shift. This is an ideal starting role for someone who wants to learn the ins and outs of bar operations in a fast-paced, theatrical environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Batching & Prepping: Assist with batching pre-made/cocktail components, mixers, and garnishes (e.g. juice, syrups, citrus wedges) as needed for service.
• Stocking & Inventory Maintenance: Restock liquor, beer, wine, mixers, garnishes, glassware, napkins, straws, coasters and other bar supplies. Maintain beer and wine coolers / storage, monitor and replenish stock levels.
• Beer & Wine Service Support: Pour beer and/or wine in times when the bartender(s) requires that support
• Bar Cleaning & Maintenance: Wipe down and sanitize bar surfaces, clean and polish glassware, collect dirty glassware and run dishes or glassware through the dish area, clean bar mats, pour-spouts, drip trays; empty trash and recycling; mop/sweep floors if needed. Promptly clean up spills, broken glass, or other hazards.
• Closing Duties: support opening bartenders by re stocking, clean bar area, dispose trash, and help prepare for next service.
• POS & Service Support: Provide support during busy times by assisting with simple POS tasks (opening tabs, ringing in beer/wine orders), running drinks to tables or seats, and assisting bartenders with drink delivery when needed. Coordination with servers, kitchen, and security staff to ensure smooth service flow.
• Team Support: Work closely with bartenders, servers, and back-of-house to help keep service efficient, especially during peak hours. Communicate proactively about inventory levels, supply shortages, or equipment issues.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Must be 21+ (eligible to handle alcoholic beverages)
• Must be Basset and Food Handlers certifications
• Reliable, punctual, with a strong work ethic — able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume bar environment. Able to multitask and stay organized under pressure.
• Physical stamina: ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy items (cases of beer, kegs, ice bins, etc.), and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Basic familiarity with bar operations — liquor, beer, wine, mixers, glassware — a plus. Positive attitude, teamwork skills, good communication, and willingness to learn.
• Comfortable with Toast POS systems (or willingness to learn) and basic math for ring-ups if assisting with orders.
