Position: Director, Donor Engagement and Communications

Program: Development Operations

Department: Development

Reports to: Chief Development Officer

Compensation: $117,000 - $123,500 Annually

Status: 100%, Full-Time, Regular, Exempt

Probation: 180 days

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Center’s Development department is responsible for the fundraising to support the Center’s many programs and services that are not financially supported by government grants. The department raises nearly $20 million through individual gifts, private foundation grants, and estate and legacy gifts, as well as several fundraising events which include major events, such as the Center Gala.

JOB SUMMARY: The Director, Donor Engagement & Communications is a key member of the Development team, responsible for designing and executing communication strategies that advance the Center’s fundraising priorities and donor engagement goals. This role stewards donors contributing $1–$1,499 annually, fostering their growth within the donor pipeline. Collaborating with Marketing & Communications and program teams, this position develops donor-centric content, manages digital outreach, oversees stewardship programs, and drives fundraising initiatives to enhance retention and support. Additionally, it ensures brand alignment and leverages market research to refine engagement strategies.

% of Role ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

40% Marketing & Communications Strategy

  • Develop and implement annual marketing strategies to enhance visibility, donor reach, and brand awareness.
  • Create compelling donor-focused content, including impact reports, solicitation materials, acknowledgment letters, newsletters, and annual reports.
  • Oversee email campaigns, donor-specific web content, and social media strategies to engage and retain donors.
  • Identify and amplify donor and beneficiary stories to convey organizational impact.
  • Ensure all donor communications align with branding and messaging guidelines.
  • Analyze donor demographics and behaviors to refine communication strategies.
  • Develop and manage an annual donor communications calendar.

30% Donor Engagement & Stewardship

  • Oversee strategies to steward and cultivate donors contributing $1–$1,499, ensuring sustained engagement and growth.
  • Design and implement a targeted fundraising program with meaningful touchpoints for this donor segment.
  • Collaborate with the major gifts team to identify opportunities to move donors up the giving pyramid.
  • Partner with the Donor Stewardship Associate to develop personalized stewardship activities, such as thank you notes, milestone acknowledgments, and impact updates.
  • Monitor and analyze giving patterns to inform strategy and identify trends.
  • Work with the CRM manager to track engagement activities and donor progression.
  • Align donor engagement initiatives with broader fundraising goals, facilitating seamless donor transitions to higher giving levels.

20% Campaign & Budget Management

  • Coordinate fundraising campaign execution, including timelines, resources, and deliverables.
  • Monitor and allocate resources within the development department’s communication efforts.
  • Evaluate and refine workflows to streamline processes and ensure timely delivery.
  • Collaborate with development and marketing teams to ensure seamless project execution.

10% Leadership and Management Responsibilities (Budgetary & Direct Supervisory)

  • Lead regular team meetings to track progress, share best practices, and address challenges.
  • Supervise and mentor the Donor Stewardship Associate, setting clear goals and performance metrics.
  • Ensure the Donor Stewardship Associate has the tools, training, and resources needed for success.
  • Review monthly results and adjust year-end projections to achieve budgeted goals.
  • Interface with the CEO, Development, Administration, Marketing & Communications, and program staff to advance organizational goals.
  • Serve as a member of the Development Leadership Team and contribute to overall fundraising strategy and implementation.
  • In close coordination with the Chief Development Officer, develop annual revenue and expense budgets.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of relevance to LGBTQ people.
  • A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in development, marketing, or annual fund.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Willing and able to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce, and Social Media Platforms.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
