Job Summary

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for a Lecturer I position to teach various levels of Polish language to begin January 7, 2026 thru April 30, 2026. This is a 66.66% non-tenure track position for winter term, hired on a term-to-term basis, contingent upon performance, programmatic need, availability of work, and funding. The position has the possibility of continuing and increasing up to a 100% appointment depending on the qualifications, experience, performance of the chosen candidate and funding availability.
Responsibilities*

Winter term 2026 duties will include teaching the second semester of 2nd and 3rd year Polish language courses for primarily undergraduate students. The position involves course preparation, in-person teaching, grading, holding office hours on campus weekly for at least two hours per week, maintaining regular contact with students through email and collaborating with other Polish studies faculty to meet the needs of the program and provide enhanced cultural activities.
Required Qualifications*
  • MA in Polish Studies, Second Language Acquisition or related field
  • Native/near native fluency in Polish with strong fluency in historical and contemporary Polish culture.
  • At least two years' experience teaching Polish from beginner to advanced levels
  • At least one year experience in language teaching and proficiency-oriented instruction at a North American collegiate institution
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level
  • Demonstrated experience implementing innovative pedagogical methods in teaching
Desired Qualifications*
  • PhD in Polish Studies, Second Language Acquisition, Slavic Studies, or related field
  • Evidence of use of current technology and innovative methodologies in foreign language instruction
  • Evidence of language proficiency curriculum development
  • Secondary specialization in another eastern European language and/or culture
We anticipate the offer will be made by early December 2025. The Chair of the Department has final approval authority in the hiring for this position.
Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes . Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
