Position Summary

Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants (Advanced Practice Clinicians - APCs) in the division of Hospital Medicine provide care for hospitalized patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. APCs collaborate individually with physicians from WashU Medicine, Division of Hospital Medicine.


APCs provide care for patients of varying complexity and occasionally in the event of a clinical deterioration. At all times, a hospitalist physician is available for consultation and involvement in patient care. No ambulatory care is required. While working closely with division physicians, APCs will be expected to operate with substantial clinical autonomy. Candidates should be familiar with the provision of inpatient care and proficient in acute care medicine.


Provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a physician; conducts complete physicals, provides treatment, and counsels patients; may, in some instances, prescribe medication.


The Nocturnist position specifically applies to evening and night shifts. The expected schedule for a nocturnist APP could be three 12-hour shifts, four 10-hour shifts, or a similar flexible schedule. The starting salary is $130,000, with a minimum 50% commitment to these types of shifts. The general responsibilities will involve admission to the hospital and cross coverage of patients.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Performs physical assessments/examinations.
• Assesses and counsels patients and obtains medical histories.
• Monitors patient's adherence to protocols.
• Coordinates screening for research studies.
• Collects and records data per research requirements and guidelines.
• Develops and implements adherence plans used with protocols.
• Bills for professional services as permitted by the collaborative practice agreement.
• Interprets diagnostic tests results for deviations from normal.
• Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval.
• Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram and laboratory test.
• Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care and infection management.
• Provides physicians with assistance during surgery or complicated medical procedures.
• Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings and workshops.
• Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objective, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
